Small business waste collection without a bin contract

If your business makes a small or irregular amount of waste, you can often avoid a bin contract and still keep proper paperwork.

Small business waste collection does not have to mean a bin on the pavement and a long contract. Small business waste management, small business waste disposal and business waste collection come down to the same practical choices. Shops, cafes and small offices that make a little waste, or make it irregularly, have three practical routes: scheduled van collections, one-off removals and the council's own trade waste service where one is offered. Each route still needs proper separation and paperwork.

This guide sets out how each option works, who has to separate waste, and what to check before you agree a collection. It is written for owner-operators of small shops, cafes and offices across East London.

Small business waste collection: the three main options

OptionSuitsWhat to check
Scheduled van collectionWaste that builds up on a regular patternHow often we collect, your access hours, how the paperwork works for repeat trips, and what happens if your volume changes.
One-off removalA clear-out, a move or a single overflowA fixed price from photos, what is included, and when the collection can happen.
Council trade waste serviceBusinesses whose council offers oneWhether food waste and recycling are included, how it is charged and how collections are scheduled. Check your council's website.

We do not offer wheelie-bin trade waste contracts with bins left on site. If your business needs bins on the premises for daily collections, that is a different service, and we are not the right supplier for it.

Who must separate small business waste

In England, businesses must keep dry recyclables, food waste and non-recyclable waste apart before collection. Businesses with 10 or more full-time equivalent employees have had to do this since 31 March 2025. Micro-firms, with fewer than 10 full-time equivalent employees, have until 31 March 2027. Gov.uk's guidance on workplace recycling sets out these dates and the three streams. Read the gov.uk guidance on simpler recycling for workplaces.

The headcount is for the whole business, not one site. Part-time staff count as a fraction based on their hours. Volunteers, contractors and self-employed workers do not count. The food waste rule applies no matter how little food waste you produce, so a small café still needs a food stream.

What a small business still has to do

  • Check that the carrier is registered, using the Environment Agency public register.
  • Sort and store your waste safely and securely before collection.
  • Complete a waste transfer note for each load that leaves your premises, or a document with the same information.
  • Keep copies of those records for two years.
  • Do not let a carrier dispose of your waste illegally. Gov.uk asks businesses to report carriers who dump waste illegally to Crimestoppers.

Scheduled collections without bins on site

A scheduled van collection takes your waste away on a set pattern, with no bins left on your premises. Until collection day, the waste is kept in your own containers or bags in a secure place. Scheduled collections suit a shop or cafe that fills a few sacks a week, although the exact pattern depends on your volume.

For regular collections of the same waste, ask whether a season ticket suits your paperwork. A season ticket covers transfers of non-hazardous waste for up to a year, provided the waste holder, the carrier and the waste type stay the same, and each collection is recorded in a schedule.

How much waste counts as small?

There is no single cut-off between small and large. A practical test is to count how many sacks or containers you fill in a typical week, and whether that pattern changes with the seasons or with deliveries. A shop with a busy December, or a cafe that changes its menu, may be small most of the year and busy for a few weeks. Scheduled collections can follow the usual pattern, and one-off removals can cover the peaks.

Review the arrangement every few months. If your volume rises or falls, a scheduled collection can be adjusted, and a one-off removal can cover a sudden clear-out. A short review keeps the arrangement matched to what you actually produce, and keeps the paperwork matched to the work.

Reduce what you produce before you collect it

The waste hierarchy puts prevention first. For a small business, that means ordering what you need, storing stock so that it does not spoil, and reducing packaging where you can. Prevention does not replace collection, but a smaller waste stream costs less to handle and is easier to keep sorted. Under the hierarchy, disposal is the last option, so each reduction moves waste up the chain.

Storing waste safely before collection

Gov.uk asks businesses to sort and store waste safely and securely. In practice, keep dry recycling and general waste in covered containers, keep food waste covered and away from customers, and make sure nothing is left where someone else could pick it up. A small, tidy store area is enough for most shops and cafes, and it makes collection day faster. Label each container so that anyone covering for you knows which stream goes where. Before you agree a collection, our checklist for choosing a waste company covers the questions to ask.

Questions to ask before you agree a small-business collection

  • What is the smallest load you will collect, and is there a charge for a small load?
  • Can you take food waste as well as dry recycling and general waste, or do I need a second supplier?
  • How will the paperwork work for each collection, and will a season ticket suit it?
  • What access do you need, and what happens if the bags are not ready on the day?
  • Will you put the price and the scope in writing before the first collection?

Ask the same questions of every supplier, so the answers are easy to compare. Get the answers in writing before you commit. If a supplier cannot answer one of these questions clearly, treat that as a reason to look at another quote.

How Commercial Rubbish supports small businesses

Rid Junk Ltd runs Commercial Rubbish. We offer one-off removals and scheduled repeat collections, with a fixed price agreed before work starts. Our crew loads your waste into our own van and leaves no bins or skips on site. We complete a waste transfer note for each business job, invoice the company and can agree account terms.

Standard hours are Monday to Saturday, 7am to 7pm, and out-of-hours work can be arranged. We do not take food waste, cooking oil, liquids, asbestos, hazardous or clinical waste, and we do not offer certified confidential shredding. Our commercial waste collection page sets out the service. To get a fixed price, send photos of the waste and the access through our contact page.

Questions businesses ask

Can I book a one-off collection for a small load?

Yes. We offer one-off commercial waste removals as well as scheduled repeat collections. Send photos of the waste and the access, and we will confirm what we can take and give you a fixed price. For a small load, a one-off removal is often the simplest first step, and it lets you see how the service works before you set up a schedule.

Are micro-firms exempt from separating their waste?

No. Micro-firms, with fewer than 10 full-time equivalent employees, have until 31 March 2027 to comply with the separation requirement. They are not exempt. The headcount covers the whole business, and volunteers, contractors and self-employed workers do not count towards it.

Can I use the council's trade waste service?

Many councils run their own commercial or trade waste service, but what it covers varies. Check your council's website for what it offers, how it is charged and whether food waste and recycling are included. Household recycling centres are set up for residents, so they are not normally a route for business waste.

Do you leave wheelie bins on site?

No. We do not offer trade waste contracts with wheelie bins left on the premises. Our service is van collection: our crew loads the waste and takes it away, and no bins or skips are left behind. If you need bins on site for daily collections, you will need a different provider.

Business waste to go?

Send photos of the job. We reply with one fixed price, in writing, and book the crew.
